A tattoo is a permanent design on your skin made by injecting a needle with indelible ink into the skin along the lines of the pattern.

Tattoo machines are available in many forms.  Mechanically, there are two types of. One is known as coil and the other as rotary. There are machines that are known for its technical features and are known as liners, shaders and colour.

The initial tattoo machines to be created were the rotary machines which were based up on rotary technology and invented by Samuel O’Reilly. These use an electric motor to activate the needles.

.In the coil tattoo machines the groups of needles are activated by means of an electromagnetic circuit. The standard types of coil are dual – coiled machines. There are also single coiled and triple coiled machines. These machines are made out of a variety of material and are available in a range of sizes and shapes.

The Liner Tattoo machines lay the ink on the skin in a single dose so that the main outline of the pattern is created. The machine should be equipped with the proper size of coil to achieve its purpose. For the machine to work at high speed it is built with a short contact circuit.

Shader tattoo machines do as they say. They shade. The most common colour used for shading is black and the different shades of black. Other colours too could be used. The liner machines have a circuit contact gap of about 1.5 mm – 2.0 mm, for it to work fast the shader has a contact gap of about 2mm – 3.5 mm so as to slow down the working of the machine.

The colour saturation tattoo machines saturate the tattoo with colour. This machine could also be used to blend colours. The circuit contact gap in this machine is about 3mm – 5 mm so that it works at a slow rate. This is necessary so that the colour is injected into the skin very slowly so as not to create any trauma. This system also allows for the colour of the tattoo to be brighter and the machine could be used to make highlights on the tattoo design. 

Tattooing is an art and to prevent any trauma to the skin it is essential that the tattoo machines are used by ably qualified personnel. 

Before tattoo machines, tattoos were created by means of an electric pen invented by Thomas Alva Edison and modified by Samuel O’reilly in 1891, which would feed the ink into the skin.
