Loon Behavior

Loons are diurnal birds. They spend their time hunting, feeding, resting, and caring for young. The Common Loon swims underwater to catch prey. Loons are excellent swimmers. They eat fish, amphibians, snails, and crustaceans. Loons have four distinct calls which they use to communicate between them. These are the tremolo, wail, yodel and hoot. Their unusual cries are distinct to individuals and can be heard at great distances.
